STEM in Sport Program
In 2023, PKUC launched its first STEM in Sport Programme for students in Year 9-12. The program saw rapid growth, jumping from 14 participants in its first year to 50 in its second.
The 2024 STEM in Sport Programme, proudly sponsored by Santos, brought together over 50 students and athletes from various disciplines. We partnered with local sports clubs to introduce more athletes into the program and with local schools to involve a greater number of students. In 2024, we were also invited to various events to showcase our work โ including the Karratha Senior High School Science Fair, FeNaCING Festival, Stars Foundation Future Forum and Exmouth Career Expo.
The STEM in Sport programme aims to enhance student engagement and achievement in STEM through sport, while also helping students and athletes develop valuable academic skills. It also increases awareness of study pathways and career opportunities in health, exercise and sports science. The STEM in Sport Programme continues to benefit communities across the Pilbara and Kimberley regions.
High school students collaborated with athletes from local sporting clubs, using innovative human measurement technologies to investigate energy systems and their roles in sports such as swimming, basketball, netball, soccer and BMX. Each student developed a research hypothesis and presented their findings to a panel of judges, with prizes awarded to the top performers.
